2012 Program

Elk Grove, California to Osaka, Japan

The Elk Grove School District sent 13 students and 2 chaperones to Osaka, Japan from June 4-18, 2012.  The students stayed with host families and attended classes at three different high schools across this majestic city.  While there, they studied the Japanese language, history, government, calligraphy, cooking, folk dancing, and many other activities.  They also participated in after-school club activities.  Organized cultural outings included visits to Kyoto, Nipponbashi shopping district, and to other impressive venues.  During the weekends the host families took the students individually to other special places as well.

Program Reflections

"The program was overall very fun.  I feel that it gave me a very good idea of life in Japan, and prepared me for the possibility of teaching here in the future."

-Amber, Student

"I think this is a really great program and I am so glad to have been able to participate in it.  It was an overall wonderful experience and it renewed my interest in the Japanese culture and language."

-Gabrielle, Student

"This program provided a life time experience our studnets will cherish all their lives.  It was great to see how our students easily adapted to the Japanese lifestyle with help from their host parents, host students, school friends, and teachers.  All students learned something new every day, and they loved every minute of their stay.  All Japanese host families adored and spoiled our students with their warm hospitality.  Our two weeks were filled with events and activities that were provided by three participating high schools in Osaka.  This is such a valuable program for both Japanese and American students.  I hope our program will stay strong for many more years to come."

-Ms. Kiuchi, Teacher
