August 6, 2018


The Senate welcomed a delegation of three members from the Legislative Council of New South Wales, Australia, led by the Honorable John Ajaka MLC, President of the Legislative Council. The purpose of their visit was to learn more about California’s government, trade and investment, energy management, and fire recovery and emergency management, and to continue other potential cooperative projects between California and NSW, Australia. A multi-country delegation of 25 fellows participating in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Mandela Washington Fellowship visited the Capitol in order to learn more about California’s energy policy. His Excellency António Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal, addressed the members from the dais of the Senate Chamber. This occasion marked the first time a sitting prime minister of Portugal has visited the State Capitol of California. One elected official, accompanied by one Parliamentary staffer and one private sector professional from Libya visited the Capitol as part of the State Department’s Women in Leadership program to study California policies that promote gender equality. They met with Senators Holly Mitchell, Hannah-Beth Jackson and Steven Bradford. They are pictured here with Senator Mitchell.

In honor of Canada Day at the Capitol, the Senate welcomed the Honorable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food of Canada, the Honorable Rana Sarkar and the Honorable James Villeneuve, Consuls General of Canada in San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. The delegation was accompanied by Sergeant Major Doug Spencer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. President pro Tempore-Elect Toni Atkins introduced the Canadian guests on the Senate floor.
