This course will trace the political, economic, social, and cultural history of Brazil since the arrival of the Portuguese in 1500. It will examine indigenous societies, colonial governance, plantation agriculture, slavery and the slave trade, independence from Portugal, the two Bragança empires, and the republic since 1889. Students will learn about this history through 2 textbooks and a historical novel. Several guest lectures are planned, Brazilian movies and documentaries “made in Brazil”.
